The Government of the United Arab Emirates present the Zayed Sustainability Prize in Costa Rica
The new Edition of the Zayed Sustainability Prize gathered more than 60 of the leading local government representatives as well as representatives from private industries and some of the countries most important sustainability and environment driven organizations and associations.
San José, May 3rd 2019: Mr. Rashed Alhmoudi, Second Secretary and Charge d’affaires of the United Arab Emirates Embassy in Costa Rica shared on May 3rd the strong bid on the part of the UAE and the compromise of the Founding Father of the United Arab Emirates with sustainability: “This prize was created to honor the legacy of our Founding Father Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan a defender of the importance of sustainability”.
For the presentation of the Zayed Sustainability Prize leading local and international representatives such as Fidel Jaramillo, Representative to Costa Rica of the Interamerican Development Bank (BID in spanish), León Santana, President of the Administrative Board of the Central Vulcanic Range Development Foundation (FUNDECOR in spanish), Juan Enrique Quintanilla, Executive Director of FUNDECOR, Roman Macaya Hayes, President of the Board of the Costa Rican Social Security Institute as well as other distinguished guests from local government offices, organizations, associations, private companies and educational centers such as the Viceministry of Water, Oceans, Coasts and Wetlands, the Business Development Association (AED in spanish), the Griegas Environment and Health Associations Union (UNAGUAS in spanish), the Costa Rican Institute of Aqueducts and Sewerage (AyA in spanish), Naturbanas Routes Organization, the Environment, Health and Economy Association (ACOPE in Spanish), the National Agricultural Technology Transference and Innovation Institute (INTA in spanish), the Costa Rican Solar Energy Association (ACESOLAR in spanish) and the National Seed Bank Office (ONS in spanish) amongst other important institutions were all present to learn about this prize and the meaning of it and its ideology.
This Prize recognises and awards three million dollars to pioneers in the innovation field that present ideas and initiatives to make front against the global challenges in the fields of sustainability. The candidates participate presenting projects that can impact the water, foods, energies, health and education fields.
The Director of the Prize for Latinamerica, Yanire Braña, reassured all of the participants of her disposition to help all companies and associations in Costa Rica so that they can get access to international resources. “This new edition of the Zayed Sustainability Prize is aligned with the United Nations objectives for sustainable development and the national UAE agenda for 2021. Costa Rican companies are impacting and showing tangible results in the sustainability field”.
Showcasing a case of success in the field of sustainability in Costa Rica, León Santana, President of the Administrative Board of the Central Vulcanic Range Development Foundation (FUNDECOR) highlighted: “FUNDECOR feels honored and proud of presenting with the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates in Costa Rica the Zayed Sustainability Prize to national organizations and institutions. This represents a decisive step forward in the establishment of bridges between both nations, bridges that we believe can be explored to combine the talent, experience and added values, all visions that nurture the Green Hub initiative. United Arab Emirates like Costa Rica continue putting their ambition for sustainability in the highest place.
About the Price: The prize was created in 2008 to honor the legacy of the Founding Father of the United Arab Emirates Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, spirited defender of the importance of global sustainability and humanitarian development throughout his life.
The winners of the Zayed Sustainability Prize will be announced in an award ceremony during the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week in January of 2020.
The Award in Numbers: During the last eleven years of the Zayed Sustainability Prize its winners and finalists have had a positive impact on the lives of over 318 million people, reducing compensated carbon emitions by 1.3 billion tons, bringing solar energy to over 50 million homes, bringing drinkable water to over 8.5 million people as well as creating over 400,000 jobs.
